Watercolors of D. Kay Weingardt
I've always known that I was an artist. I just didn't do anything about it
for 60 years. Then I discovered watercolor. It intimidated and challenged me, and I knew that I had found my medium. I love the transparency and freshness that only watercolor can give.

My favorite subjects are people. Everything about the human face and figure fascinates me, from the myriad flesh tones to the diverse gestures and expressions.

My journey is one of learning. To find a way to convey the spirit and individuality of my subjects, and to do it in watercolor. This is how I want to spend the rest of my life.

Raised in a small town in the heart of Montana's cattle country, I have
spent most of my adult life in Colorado, five wonderful years of that in
our beautiful high country. I now reside in the Denver area.

I dabbled in oils briefly when my two sons were young, but let that go
and didn't begin my love affair with watercolor until I was in my 60s.

I have had little formal art education, but have profited greatly from my
last seven years' association with the Art Student's League of Denver,
Dennis Pendleton in particular, my mentor. Most recently I studied
with Joseph Fettingis, nws.

A few years ago, I swallowed my inhibitions and entered my first juried
art show. I won the Judges' Award and sold the painting! What encouragement! Since then, I have tried to paint more and have won
a dozen awards in regional shows, including several Best of Show. It
is a particular honor to be included to participate in invitational shows.
My most recent awards are the North Denver Art's Alliance Award in
April 2008 and Best of Show in Art From the Heart Show in Feb. 2009.

In celebration of the Art Student's League's 20th anniversary in 2007, past and present faculty chose to showcase artists who have studied at theLeague, have become successful, and have made an impact on the
community. I was honored to be chosen to join this impressive group
of artists.
